Daily Journal's "Diner makes way to Broadway – Burlingame's Broadway area could see a diner in its future"

Joannie's Happy Days Diner will be one of the study items discussed by the Burlingame Planning Commission Monday. Recently the City Council allowed for five new restaurants in the Broadway area. The diner won't be voted on this time, but if it is approved down the road it will be the fourth food service establishment application turned in to the city. Other applications include a family-style grill and an upscale Italian restaurant. The additions came after the merchants of Broadway asked for more restaurants in the area. Joannie's will be at 1199 Broadway and will serve breakfast and lunch.

We like the idea because we feel that these are high-quality establishments and will bring people to the street. Common wisdom is if you have a conglomeration of quality restaurants, if one is full people will go to the other. Restaurants tend to augment one another as opposed to compete or stamp out one another,? said Ross Bruce, president of the Broadway Business Improvement District.

Councilwoman Ann Keighran said it seems like just the sort of restaurant the people of Burlingame want. According to recent surveys, the number one thing people wanted was family-oriented dining, she said. Keighran said a diner would probably do well on Broadway. With one spot open, Bruce knows just the sort of place he'd like to see fill it. We'd like to see a bakery. One of our original ideas was to accommodate a bakery. We're still looking to get a bakery. Calling all bakers, anyone out there in readerland is a baker and would like to have a bakery in an upscale neighborhood, we would love to hear from him or her,? he said
