Bikers in Burlingame

Actually, the term would be cyclists. Today was Ryans Ride and the annual Criterium. Seems the crowd were a little light. Perhaps due to the overcast weather or perhaps because the course could not take place throughout downtown as in year's past because of the contruction on Burlingame Avenue. Never the less, those who attneded saw some great racing. Here's a a very quick video clip. turning the corner from Primrose onto Donnely.

 

Bocce Anyone?

It looks like the new bocce courts in Washington Park are coming along well.  Bocce (or boules for Francophiles) adds a great ambiance to a park...much more so than horseshoes--not that I ever saw anyone playing horseshoes on those old pitches.

I certainly hope that is not dog droppings on the right hand court since that will just aggravate an already contentious issue about the Park.

Niners in the house

Actually, it's Niners "on" the house...right here in B'Game. Hey anybody can wear a niner t-shirt to show their enthusiasm, but I think these folks win the prize.

Playing on the Big Court

It was a fun surprise to see the OLA Angels basketball team on the court at Oracle Arena at halftime tonight.  Their quick game and the Warriors' full-length game went about the same.  Both played well but had trouble containing their opponents' big men and ended up losing.

Either way, I'm sure it's a game those kids will remember forever.

Winning The Paw in the 85th Rendition

On a crisp, clear day, the 85th game of the Burlingame-San Mateo high school football rivalry was won by B'game this afternoon, 41-13.  Some crafty running by B'game and some slippery-handed receivers for San Mateo sealed the deal to keep "The Paw" in B'game.  The boys did indeed go into beastmode!

Giants Work Their Magic

You could hear the fireworks going off all over town last night.  (Who stocks fireworks?...nobody I know).  And the honking of horns announced another Giants World Series championship.  They feel like a hometown team since there are plenty of people in B'game that work for the Giants and you can see players dining in B'game on a regular basis.

So aside from all the amazing performances--where to start--Zito back from the dead, Vogelsong going lights out, Scutaro hitting and fielding, defensive excellence all over the field, the most surprising thing for me is the changes from 2010.  I took this photo of a TV screen back during the NLCS play-offs when Nady was starting, but the point is the same with Blanco in left as well.

The Panda may be the Series MVP, but you have to give Sabean a lot of credit for building a whole new team in two years!

Comcast Panther

Tonight's Giants game marked the opening of spring training.  Seems like just last week the Torture ended, but the boys are back.  Even more noteworthy was the broadcast announcement that former BHS Panther standout shortstop Drew Shiller has apparently landed an announcing gig with Comcast Sportsnet as the "Stanford Radio Analyst".  Can't wait to hear what that is all about.  And, yes, he did play two other sports at BHS.

Foot Fun in B'game

The Daily Journal has profiled the futsal facility over on Rollins Rd.  Between futsal, the go-cart racing and a couple of gyms, the Rollins Rd. area is getting plenty of traffic. 

Present and future athletes from as far as Campbell, San Bruno and even Half Moon Bay ranging from ages 2 to 60 are attending Burlingamers, a center for fine-tuning soccer and even futsal skills for recreation and competitions.

Futsal?

The sport is a close-quarters, fast-paced style of soccer, at the same time independent in its own right with different rules and an essential, unique and aggressive finesse.

Housing more than 130 teams totaling about 3,000 players per week, Burlingamers has developed futsal champions and hosted tournaments out of a modest facility on the border of Burlingame and Millbrae. Funded by private investors, Burlingamers is an indoor soccer field divided into two courts, the primary interest being futsal.

Donna Colson (with the help of a coach, Dusko Rosic) built, owns and participates in Burlingamers.

Nice work, Donna.

Kudos to BHS Grapplers

I'm late in congratulating the BHS wrestling team on a big 48-24 win over Capuchino HS that allowed them to finish in a three-way tie for first place in the PAL Ocean division.  The team has built on the momentum gained from hosting last year's PAL tournament and has a bright future.  Here's the team after the last pin ended the meet.

It's a nice counterpoint to the distractions around campus over the last week.

Burlingame is Mayberry in so many ways.

Here's proof. There ain't nothin' like the feeling surrounding the "Little Big Game."
