Recently, the country has become visibly more patriotic. We have all seen the cars with antenna flags and homes with flags waving proudly. So, why have I noticed so many majestic flag poles in Burlingame that are void of Old Glory 99% of the time? For example, The Burlingame High School track has a tremendous flagpole with a memorial at its base of those Burlingame servicemen who were lost in battle. Sad that there is almost never a flag flying there. Along Trousdale Drive are two empty poles-one is surprisingly the American Red Cross building and the other is its next door neighbor. Across the street however, the Burlingame School District office gets points for almost always having a flag flying high on its flagpole. A rusty and unadorned flagpole sits at 1220 Howard Avenue and there are many others. What's up with all the lonely flagpoles folks?
More irony. It's been reported that our own Councilman Galligan has been named to a seat on the County Transportation Authority. Is this the same Joe G. who has a financial interest in a large long term parking facility near the airport? If the board’s goal is to get people out of their cars and into public transportation why would they appoint a guy whose business relies on getting people into cars? What’s up with that?
We must be a thirsty bunch here in Burlingame. There are not one or two,but eight vending machines in front of Safeway on Howard Avenue. Six are for sodas and two for water. What's up with all the drinks outside when there are plenty inside?
What’s up with that long, white fence along California Drive near Oak Grove? Will this be a future graffiti magnet?
Sometimes the wheels of local government move slowly. When it comes to appointing qualified people to serve on The Burlingame Planning Commission it’s about to move even slower. Senior Commission members, Stan Visitica and Ann Keighran’s terms are about to expire. They have both served only one term. They are both interested in serving another term. Mayor Janney and Councilmen Coffey and Galligan apparently don’t want that to happen. They have voted to open up the application process when a simple reappointment was clearly in order. (An administrative act if you will.) This appears to be retaliation for differences of opinion. Rather than appreciate differing perspectives, now all who serve as commissioners run the risk of punishment. A resounding 'What’s up with that?'
