The city council election of 2003 will go on record as the most expensive Burlingame city election in living memory when a new high water mark was set in the amount of money raised and spent. We had one heck of an election back in November. Big money, new names and another Old Guard loss. A medal for election punditry goes to columnist John Horgan for his piece on Councilman Joe Galligan's faux-support for Dan Anderson. Throughout the great Safeway debates one of the recurring themes was that Burlingame needs a modestly-priced grocery store for those who can’t afford Mollie Stone’s or Lunardi ’s, (the other two major grocery stores in Burlingame). Do trees buckle sidewalks or vice versa?
About 200 eucalyptus trees line El Camino Real in Burlingame. Landscaper-gardener John McLaren planted many of the largest ones in the 19th century, as windbreaks for elm trees. When Dutch Elm disease hit the country several decades ago, all but a handful of the elms died leaving the stately giant Gum Eucalyptus to adorn our historic stretch of highway. They have suffered everything from ill-advised pruning to car accidents for more than a hundred years. The trees are vulnerable to fungal infections and rotting trunks and roots, leading to concerns about their stability. Despite these vulnerabilities, many remain vigorous enough to buckle sidewalks and curbs along El Camino, leading to significant maintenance costs. They are also the most notable Burlingame landmarks in a time when many towns look like Anywhere USA....[more]
