Broadway improvements
The Phase I contractor was eventually found to be 'substandard' and many parking spaces were 'lost' in the design. A new redesign has restored parking. Many in the community are wondering if the street really will look better in the end since Phase I looks the same .
Storage USA building
After a huge neighborhood protest and a project denial by the Planning Commission, the site's owners have proposed a smaller office building plan.
Drive-in office complex
Construction has started on the site. No effort or plans to improve traffic flow or freeway access from Airport Blvd. are in the works. Too bad Burlingame did not learn from San Mateo and the Bay Meadows development.
Safeway expansion
No official plans have been submitted despite several presentations by Safeway to the local business community. We are hoping Safeway will soon hold a public forum.
Teen center
Consultants are studying the proposed location, size and possible designs. Community focus groups are in progress.
General Plan revisions
The City Council was 'too busy' in 2000 to revise the General Plan. Lately, several City Council meetings have been one hour long or less. Hopefully the new city manager will make revising the General Plan a priority.
Limits on basement size
The Planning Commission approved a new ordinance that adds basement space in excess of 600 square feet into the property's floor area ratio calculation. The City Council must approve the ordinance for it to become part of the Residential Building Code.
SFO runway expansion
The recent discovery that San Mateo County has some legal clout in the runway decision has revitalized efforts to get San Francisco to take the Peninsula's interests into account. Of course, more runways mean more take-offs and landings.
Historical properties list
This list has not been updated since 1982 when it was first proposed and has never been adopted. Since then Burlingame has lost about one-third of the properties to demolition or to alterations so significant that the structures may no longer qualify as historic.
