With Jerry Hill being termed out of office, the race for our State Senate seat is drawing a crowd. We listed the earlier entrants here and last week I had a chance to see the latest entrant make her debut. Millbrae city councilwoman Annie Oliva is the latest candidate. She drew a good crowd of friends and fellow realtors to the Coyote Point Yacht Club last Thursday. When I spoke to her about positions papers she said they would be forthcoming so we will look for those going forward.
Ms. Oliva's kick-off speech focused on her family's long ties to San Mateo County (Marshall Realty of San Bruno is the family business since 1959) and some of the challenges we face as a county. She got a smile out of me when she mentioned the "Train to Nowhere" in her speech. She went on to talk about the housing affordability "crisis" noting that a family's house is one of their main assets and path to a secure future. There was no specific mention of SB 50 so that will be a position paper of extreme interest. We need a state senator who will protect his/her constituents' investments. Her main platform revolved around mental health treatment based on her family's experience with the issue. It's impossible to argue we shouldn't be doing more in that area, the question is what and how to pay for it. Again, we shall see.
This is going to be an expensive race to win. Senate District 13 was nearly a million people back in 2010. Reaching them with one's message by November will take expertise and money. Here is Annie Oliva at the podium announcing her entry into the race.
