The Spring is Buzzing post generated some additional photo submissions including a shot of one of our very own sealions hanging out just north of the Embassy Suites hotel on the bayfront. He looks well-fed to me!
I had a nice chat with a current council member at last night's annual Council-Commissioners appreciation dinner about finding a way to do some improvements to the state land that is just a bit down the shore from here. It's unimproved bayfront right now. His idea is to have a city-owned billboard for rent that would be visible from 101. He gets points for thinking out of the box.
This is an oldie, but a real goodie: SM Times Febrary 1960:
BURLINGAME PIGEONS ARE NOT GETTING SLEEPING PILLS
Burlingame city manager Charles Schwalm today reported that no plans are being undertaken to give the pigeons of Burlingame sleeping tablets, despite reports to the contrary given the Bird Guardians League of San Francisco. Schwalm, who had been plagued with bird lovers since last November when a three month old report that police took pigeon pot-shots in the early morning, trying to exercise the flocks declared:
"There ought to be a league for protection of city managers from pigeon-lovers."
He said informal discussions about the sleeping powder method of removing pigeons from the precincts of Burlingame- they would wake up at a bird sanctuary- were held last year, but no action was taken then.
The original action was taken after merchants and residents complained that certain corners in downtown Burlingame were being taken over by the birds, and it had become dangerous to wear good clothing on the streets, in the daytime.
J. Edward Dahlen, vice president of the "guardians", however, says he is shocked at the report that pigeons might go "sleepy time" with human aid. He said the report was that the pigeons would be liquidated after being fed sleeping powder left on the corners of the buildings where they roost. He indicated that his organization - 400 members strong, had a ruling from the attorney general that pigeons are considered to be animals, and it would be a misdemeanor to harm them, even with the help of the humane society.

I know at least one Broadway merchant would would love, I mean love, the City to take the sleeping pill approach to pigeon control. At a minimum he would like BPD to deal with the person who willfully feeds pigeon right on B'way.
