Here's the link to the full article from the San Mateo County Times on the High School District Board election that starts
SAN MATEO — Bolstering the budget and enhancing the curriculum in the San Mateo Union High School District took center stage during a recent meeting with board candidates at the Times' offices.
Trustees Robert Griffin, Peter Hanley and Linda Lees Dwyer seek re-election Nov. 3 while two challengers — businessman Mike Loy and program specialist Guadalupe Ortiz — hope to join the board. The five candidates are competing for three open seats.
I'm not sure if the paper will be doing endorsements or not in this race.
Now that the election is over...
The SMUHSD and the San Mateo Foster City School Districts have FAILED to meet there education mandates as required by NCLB. Even though the SMUHSD failed to meet criteria in two areas, they are under scrutiny.
They have been identified as Title I PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT Districts and are now REQUIRED to meet new academic standards.
What does this mean?
Even though Burlingame High School has met its standards, it may get dragged down by the rest of the district. If the SMUHSD does not meet its objectives, then the curriculum will get watered down as all schools will be required to be on the same page every day. It will be a slow page. The district has already begun to implement policies that will slow down the level instruction in the classroom and has sent teachers to "professional development training" to increase the use of language development in the mainstream classroom.
While the district must bring up the scores of two defined student groups, they should not drag down the educational challenges of the entire student population.
It is interesting that this topic is getting very little discussion. When will the public know the plan as to how this problem will be solved and how it will impact all of the children.

Thanks. What should parents and taxpayers do about it?

Get informed. Why is this happening yet no one seems to know anything about it.
Who is in charge?
What is the plan?
How is this going to impact my student?
