Yesterday morning, October 14th, Assemblyman Jerry Hill hosted a morning coffee to invite conversation about community issues. This was a great opportunity to have his full attention for the top issue with many Peninsula residents – High Speed Rail.
Assemblyman Hill reserved a table for approximately 10 guests, and before he knew it, he was surrounded on all sides by approximately 50 citizens concerned about the potential blight of High Speed Rail on our community. With all of the comings and goings of residents on their way to work, I would say there was a total of 65 in attendance. The concerns and questions covered a wide range:
Why can’t we get answers from the High Speed Rail folks?
Do we really believe that we will be getting anything other than a large raised structure cutting through the Peninsula, given the financial constraints of the HSR budget?
How can they start this project with an incomplete business plan?
Where do they get their crazy (my word) ridership numbers?
How can you help us?
And he heard lots of our opinions!
Aside from one gentleman who was there to advocate for off-shore oil drilling and lowered taxes, and another, trying to determine if Jerry Hill is a socialist, we were all engaged in the HSR conversation.
Kudos to Assemblyman Hill for sponsoring this excellent event. His poise and generous spirit in entertaining our sometimes heated debate was noted. We can only hope that he will carry our message back to the State Capitol.
