AVELAR, SELLERY Speaking of the local halls of academe, the trustees of the San Mateo Union High School District are scheduled to meet today to consider hiring an interim superintendent. The district's current boss, the embattled Sam Johnson, is going to retire at the end of June. The trustees, who are under enormous pressure in the wake of a series of self-inflicted fiscal foul-ups that have placed the district in some jeopardy, may have a difficult time finding someone toreplace Johnson in-house, even temporarily.
The upper management bench is rather thin right now, as noted in the past. However, there are a number of former district administrators who might be available. The retired Mark Avelar, for one, comes to mind immediately. So does ex-superintendent Nicholas Gennaro. Even Austin Sellery is out there. He ran the district several decades ago. He has returned to San Mateo in retirement. Still, the interim post is just one of a host of problems faced by the trustees. Their plate is full, courtesy of their own unfortunate missteps
