Terry Nagel of Burlingame not only challenged the political establishment but shook up Pacific Gas and Electric. She became involved in public life when Burlingame was having a series of power outages and PG&E refused to respond satisfactorily to neighborhood complaints. As a former San Mateo news reporter, she made sure the individual stories of residents who had suffered from loss of electricity got good press coverage. Hundreds of Burlingame residents turned out to complain. PG&E sensed they were no match for Terry and rewired the city. The result is that the lights don't go off in Burlingame unless you want them to and Terry is not only on the council but considered the power behind it. She and her cohorts have replaced the former establishment, Joe Galligan, Mary Janney and Mike Coffey, who are no fans of Terry. It's a brand new team except for Rosalie O'Mahony and Mayor Cathy Baylock. Rosalie, who was the swing vote on the former council, supported Terry, and is too astute to remain on the sidelines. Cathy's supporters are Nagel supporters. The only male, the thorn in a bed of roses,? is Russ Cohen, who also is an ally of Terry and not much of a thorn. What a change time and an election make.
