MILLBRAE Forced to let go of Parks and Recreation Director Randy Schwartz by Burlingame's decision to drop merger plans, officials are looking internally for his replacement and saying he was instrumental in helping the department regain its footing. Randy Schwartz, who has served as director of both departments since 2003, will soon return to working just for Burlingame, leaving Millbrae no choice but to find a replacement. But City Manager Ralph Jaeck said Wednesday that he wasn't worried even though Burlingame's decision was a little bit of a surprise. I thought they might decide not to continue forward,? Jaeck said. I didn't sense that they would decide to go back.?
Jaeck said Millbrae's recreation department would be left in good shape? the beneficiary of new programs, staff reorganization and other improvements during Schwartz's tenure as department head. Schwartz will probably leave within the next four to six weeks. We want to accommodate the city of Burlingame, but there's some things he's doing here that need to be finished,? Jaeck said. Though Burlingame City Manager Jim Nantell previously supported the merger because of the reduction of duplicative tasks between the two departments, he said he respected the council's decision that there weren't significant savings? to justify a merger. I think it was an opportunity that would've benefited both cities
