BURLINGAME From more police to better disaster planning, a new city Web site to a renovated Safeway, officials will weigh priorities this weekend as they draft goals for the upcoming fiscal year. Working from a council list of potential goals and a substantial number of suggestions from local residents, the City Council will host a Budget Policy and Goal Setting Study Session on Saturday to brainstorm what the city should and financially could tackle in the near future. In doing so, the council will revisit issues such as installing wireless Internet in the city's downtown and encouraging Safeway to submit plans for a renovated store after hearing the results of the downtown economic study. Other possible goals include reducing solar power permit fees, doing away altogether with block party permit fees and increasing the library's hours of operation.
A portion of the meeting has been reserved for council members to discuss whether to pursue a citywide visioning process to determine what's best for the city's downtown and to create a Specific Area Plan. The police department is also scheduled to offer a presentation on activity at the city's downtown bars.
This is a very important meeting for us all because it is a way to meet city staff, see which councilmembers have been listening, whether we will have to dip into our pockets for storm drains and/or a new city hall and see what decisions need to be made for a better Burlingame.
