Like Mother like Son

Community involvement and energy must run in the genes! Wonder if Matt would in the future turn out to be a great councilmember like his mother!

"Matt Nagel, 22, will be riding his bike with at least a dozen others on Global Exchange's 20th annual trip from San Francisco to the nation's capital, stopping at community centers, homes and churches to attend lectures, learn about organic farming and do community service.

Matt Nagel, who is finishing an American studies degree at the University of California at Davis, said the trip combines his interest in cycling with environmentalism and fair trade.

Global Exchange is a San Francisco-based human rights nonprofit promoting environmental, political and social justice around the world, and Matt Nagel is raising $3,800 for Global Exchange a dollar for each mile of the ride. He went door to door in Burlingame looking for sponsors, had a garage sale in Davis and wrote letters to friends and relatives looking for pledges. Racking up thousands on his personal credit card is motivation for him to find sponsors, he wrote on his Web log.

Gotta love Broadway

The big pooch wedding is coming up when Lulu and Ecko, two Yorkshire terriers, will become "legal". The matrimony will happen on Saturday at 4 pm at Doodledings, 1224 Broadway. A great fun idea and I think Miss Kerry could do a great job of helping with those doggy vows!

Another special happening today on Broadway when dozens of orange shirts were seen on Broadway for a special Broadway planter day. Thanks especially to Bobbi, our master gardener, Starbucks for pastries, coffee and goody bags, Broadway merchants, the young volunteers and, of course, Citizens for a Better Burlingame who can always be counted on for getting up early on a Sunday and "doing" when needed.

Broadway is a special street for us all.

Special Recognition

At Monday's Council meeting, I tuned in at the moment when Galligan asked "all" the council members to join him down by the microphone. I knew something was up, so left the channel in place and watched him recognize some 6-8 students from OLA who had broken some record at a recent track meet. I am all for applauding the accomplishments of Burlingame's children.Yes, these kids broke some relay record, but there are MANY kids in Burlingame who have broken records that have been long standing, or achieved GREAT academic honors, and have never been recognized by the Council. Then I put two and two together and realized that one of those recogized was Galligan's daughter. Now I get it. I am confused, however, because the children of other Council members have achieved prestigious academic and athletic awards, and have never been recognized in such a ceremony, which took up about 30 minutes of the Council's time, I might add. That record will continue to be broken, as records are. Will the kids who break it next year be honored as well, and do the residents of Burlingame care where these kids will be attending High School? If Galligan is going to take the City's time to recognize the accomplishment of his daughter, he needs to recognize ALL the wonderful accomplishments of ALL the children of Burlingame, and there are MANY. What's fair is fair, now isn't it?

Renaissance Pies!

We enjoyed seeing the Washington students in their Shakespearan costumes last Sunday and we were also watching the very serious judging on the pies! The Times reporter tell us the winners:

"The fifth-grade teacher Brian McManus' peach pie was the first-place winner in the adult division. But it was the children's creations that were the most fun. I ate a "dirt" pie complete with candy worms, a Jedi pie (not made of real Jedis) and a very tart cherry pie. They were all winners, but in the end, third-grader Mitchell Gaiser's banana cream won first place, third-grader Derek Daniels' blackberry came in second, and first-grader Grace McArthur's blueberry pie came in third."

Adult Pleasures

A Starving San Mateo Times Reporter enjoys one of the gems of Buringame:

I dashed into the Copenhagen Bakery & Cafe which, although I've never been there, I have heard of, as it is one of the finest Danish bakeries on the Peninsula. The clock was ticking as I did a quick scan of all the incredibly beautiful pastries and settled on a slice of Princess Cake ($3.60). It was delicious and almost too pretty to eat, and definitely not the wisest thing to have for dinner. Whether you're a reporter or not, the best part of being an adult is having dessert whenever you want.

21st Century Museum in a 19th Century Building

In the Daily Journal today:

Russ Cohen, president of the Burlingame Historical Society, is real busy these days. Cohen is in the midst of signing a lease for the Burlingame Train Station to be used as a historical museum and is getting ready to start a foundation to help fund it. Caltrain agreed to lease the station building for free as long as whoever signed the agreement paid for maintenance.

Cohen has some grand plans. He wants what he calls a 21st century museum in a 19th century building, with interactive displays and rotating exhibits. But first he has to obtain a structural report to see what has to be done to the building. When the outside was renovated a few years back, it cost $100,000 and Cohen expects the new bill to be much more. The city, at the urging of Mayor Joe Galligan, is considering giving some money out of its enterprise fund to help out and Cohen said the money would be appreciated. If you'd like to donate, you can send a check to the Burlingame Historical Society, P.O. Box 144, Burlingame, Calif., 94011. Be sure to specify it's for the museum.

... smells just as sweet.

John Horgan in the Times discusses the new restaurant coming soon to California Drive and Burlingame Avenue - Sumac. "Why? Webster's defines "sumac" as "any of numerous non-poisonous plants of the cashew family." There is a secondary definition that may be off-putting for some: "any of several poisonous plants of the cashew family, as poison ivy, poison sumac ... etc"

I am just relieved that it will be a restaurant - whatever its name - and not a car showroom!
