For those of you who missed the come-from-behind victory of the Burlingame Red 14 year olds at Bayside Park last night, this recap just in from offical team scorekeeper, Ken Diekroger:

" San Carlos jumped to an early 4-0 lead on Zack Turner's grand slam in the first inning.
- Burlingame got one back in the third when Michael MacLeod doubled and his brother Kevin singled him home.
- Those were the only runs Burlingame scored in the first six innings as San Carlos pitcher Kevin Timko kept Burlingame in check, getting out of two bases loaded, one-out jams (first and third innings)
- Meanwhile, San Carlos took a 5-1 lead in the third when Jarrod Hopper tripled and Timko singled him home.
- Burlingame pitcher Danny Chavez relieved starter Nick Gregory with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth and promptly induced Kyle Leong to line into a double play. Chavez held San Carlos scoreless through the sixth.
- In the seventh (last regular inning in a scheduled seven inning game), Burlingame started to rally when Anthony Napolo drew a one out walk. Matt Cochran followed with a hit and Kenny Diekroeger's walk loaded the bases. Danny Chavez' hard shot doubled in two runs. Nick Gregory doubled in two more to tie the score at 5-5. Greg Diekman's sacrifice fly to left gave Burlingame a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
- San Carlos' Garrett Treadwell led off the bottom of the seventh with a two-strike double and Sean Brummer singled him home to tie the game. Burlingame pitcher Kevin MacLeod the got out of no-out, two runners on jam by striking out Tony Cooper and getting the next two hitters to fly out to end the inning in a 6-6 tie.
- Andy DeLuca starred for Burlingame in the eighth inning when he homered to deep left with two outs to give Burlingame a 7-6 lead.
- San Carlos responded in the bottom of the eighth with a single by Ryan Henze and a double by Payton Robinson to tie the game again 7-7.
-In the ninth, Kenny Diekroeger led off with a walk and reached third when Danny Chavez executed a hit and run by singling to right. Nick Gregory's sacrifice fly to left scored Diekroeger and gave the Burlingame team their final lead of the night, 8-7.
- Kevin MacLeod retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the dramatic win."

Changes are a Comin'

Yet another store is biting the dust in San Mateo. Byron's is going out after several decades, forced retirement/lost Lease. I won't even venture to say who owns that building, because I don't know. But the For Lease signs and going out of business sales are certainly becoming more commonplace. It will be interesting how San Mateo decides to handle issues like mom and pops vs. Corporate stores, or if that city, like Burlingame, takes a back seat and lets a handful of property owners determine the future of their downtown.

Pit Bulls

There's been a lot in the news lately about pit bull attacks and various municipalities including San Francisco considering banning them (and other dangerous breeds) entirely. Has this ever been considered in Burlingame? If not, why not do it now?

Parking Apology

Two local daily newspapers are reporting Mayor Joe Galligan's public apology to the Burlingame Police Department's Parking Enforcement Officers. The apology refers to his statements about overly aggressive parking enforcement, the officers' possible need for "anger management", and the possibility that some of them would "need to find another job". We applaud Mr. Galligan's effort to correct overly harsh statements spoken in venues like public meetings. We hope there will not be a need for further apologies.

Psst Wanna Buy a Train Station?

The mayor has suggested that having the city take ownership of the train station would be a good long-term objective to work toward. The other thread on this topic has tossed around some speculation on the motivation behind his making this suggestion I would like to kick off a separate discussion on the merits of the proposal.

Questions I'm thinking about include:
- What are the long-term and short-term costs, benefits, advantages and disadvantages of having the city own the station?
- Are there precedents we could learn from: small cities owning or declining to own important historical landmarks? Burlingame and the bus terminal?
- How much is the historical society paying Caltrain to lease the station for the museum, and how would this be better or worse if the city owned the station?
- Are there insurmountable barriers (legal, financial, etc) that would prevent this from happening in the long term?

Points of view I think I've heard so far (in the Daily News article and in the snippets of discussion I managed to tune into on Monday night) include:
- Galligan: we should work toward a long-term view of taking ownership
- O'Mahoney: we shouldn't have to pay for the upkeep (from the article and the meeting)
- Nagel: it may set a costly precedent (I think I heard this during the meeting apologize in advance if I misinterpreted)
- Baylock: it may not be possible (from the article)
- Cohen: need more info in order to evaluate the proposal (from the article)

What are your thoughts on this?

The Webs we Weave ...

I am in the land of Karen Blixen and Lord Delamere and noone has posted the latest on the Galligan-shannalligan of the Burlingame Historical Society grant? What's up?

After the first study session, I asked the City Manager and others whether the BHS got the effing money and they said yes.

Well it seems that $3,000 is a hard check for the present mayor to sign to the BHS. From what I have heard, the mayor thinks $3,000 should come out of the Facilities Master Plan and not the Grant Funding. If the City is going to DONATE $30,000+ towards a city museum, then of course it would have to come out of a large pot. But are we talking about $3,000 requested by the BHS or is the mayor going to donate megazillions to a community asset?

Quiet Days Begin

The slow summer days have begun. The local papers are scratching for any shred of local news. The Daily News Phantom only has a little piece about Mike Spinelli's car transmission problems. The San Mateo Times Insider blog hasn't had a new entry since May 27th (Justin come back!). Last night, the San Mateo Wine Walk set a nice example for Broadway or Burlingame Ave. to follow and there were a few obligatory photos of graduations. Even the Burlingame Voice blog appears to be enjoying the beginnings of summer slowness. Everyone get out and do an anti-rain dance so we can get on with the barbeques, pool parties and bike riding.

Crossing Guard Tide Turns

As reported in today's Daily Journal which has a reputation for having the inside scoop on what Councilwoman Rosalie O'Mahony is thinking:

O'Mahony said Tuesday she will ask the City Council to advance the $32,000 needed by the Burlingame Elementary District to fund crossing guards, contingent on a healthy positive closing financial statement for this fiscal year.?

Last week she advocated waiting until October but this change appears to speed the decision along since the 3-2 vote now swings in favor of funding the guards. One interesting thing about the article is that it does not mention that the traffic study results showed a clear need for adult supervision at all eight locations per Caltrans' guidelines. That probably had some impact on O'Mahony's thinking.

Nov 8th Election Gets More "Special"

Gov. Schwarzenegger has just announced that he signed the papers necessary for a "Special Election" on November 8th. Burlingame is scheduled to have an election that day anyway, so this just raises the visibility a bit. What do the bloggers think the impact will be on the Council race given that Burlingame voters have turned out at twice the County average in the last couple of elections anyway?
