The State Senate race between Mike Nevin, Leland Yee and Lou Papan didn't generate any headlines this week, but don't let that fool you.
When you get together three of the Peninsula's biggest politicians, you're going to have some serious, well, politickin'. Papan was hopping mad after he said he was indirectly approached by an emissary from Nevin looking to cut a deal.
The terms?
Here goes: Papan drops out of the State Senate race and Nevin would agree to back to back Papan's daughter, Gina , for a run she is considering at the Millbrae City Council. Papan was, to put it mildly, not thrilled. "The man is suffering from paranoia," Papan said of Nevin. "He's desperate and he's scared to death." Nevin's camp denied they asked Papan to drop out of the race.
"No, we haven't asked anyone to go to (Papan)," said Seamus Murphy, a member of Nevin's campaign team. "I think some people have asked in Gina's interest that he reconsider. Lou Papan running against Mike could hurt her chances in Millbrae."
(So, they are threatening Gina Papan but of course they didn't try to broker a deal...) Convential wisdom on the race is that Papan's campaign would peel more votes away from Nevin than Yee, since both Papan and Nevin are both strong in the county, while Yee has more of a base in San Francisco. Papan said such theories are bunk and he will take Jackie Speier's seat in 2006.
The story has an additional twist or two. The emissary that carried the message via Gina Papan was former County Clerk Ric Silver , who just a few months ago was publicly bashing Nevin for taking a public seat on the SamTrans board. Silver also denied Papan's story.
Meanwhile, perhaps even stranger, Papan showed up last week at an annual dinner for the family association of his opponent Leland Yee in San Francisco's Chinatown. Papan said he was invited by a Yee from San Mateo, not Leland Yee, but the appearance stoked the suspicions of Nevin's campaign, who have long believed Yee and Papan are working together.
"It's pretty dirty politics," Murphy said. "The primaries are not even over and Yee has a running mate." Both Yee and Papan deny they are working together.
