Today we got most of our Thanksgiving grocery shopping done; shopping at Safeway (on Howard and on Delaware,) and at Whole Foods in San Mateo. This time, we payed more attention to price differences and found out that Safeway may not be delivering on its promise of lower prices. Several items were priced the same, such as Martinelli's cider, which was on special at both stores for $1.99 per bottle. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, a six pack, was $7.99 at Safeway, Whole Foods price was $6.49., (the 12 pack was an even better bargain.) The big shocker was Amy's canned black bean soup, now carried with several other Amy's canned products at Safeway. It was a whopping $3.49, while the exact same can was only $2.19, (regular price) at Whole Foods. After having paid nearly $2 more on basic Arm and Hammer kitty litter last week at Safeway, (compared to the exact same product at Mollies) I am starting to feel like I've been bamboozled. On sale items where we need "the card" and 2 for ones, they are priced competitively, but what about everything else in the store? I'm beginning to wonder....

Safeway gets a plus for effort on the new soup bar as well. Unfortunately, they get a deduction for execution because the containers are lacking. I had one come loose and spill soup even before I got out of the store. After buying hot soup at Mollie's dozens of times, this has never happened there. But Safeway should keep trying.

I observed someone "double dipping" at the soup bar at Safeway Burlingame couple of weeks ago! He dipped his spoon in all four hot soups that were featured that week. YUK! I know it is not the fault of Safeway because I have also seen people do this at Mollie's. I wish there was a better way for these soup bars to operate. Safeway's new soup line is very good and reasonably priced.

I would like a list of ingredients clearly posted. I see this at Mollies and at Whole Foods, and therefore I can see that they don't use preservatives. If they are indeed posted, I haven't noticed where.

And Lunardi's beats them all with Martinelli's at $1.49 a bottle!
