A Wish List

Once again Councilwoman Nagel has proved why she is the councilmember with the most energy, the smartest and the one with the most innovative and creative and caring ideas. She has compiled a Wish list that will soon be available at our libraries, rec center, city hall, schools, churches and also on her website.

The 24-page wish list runs the gamut from baby wipes, fencing, a gate, color paper, a digital camera and dental care for kids, and many more wishes.

Thank you Terry for once again showing that you are THE best and in the spirit of the generosity of our fantastic residents this wish list will surely be filled.

12 cents for the City

In the spirit of Thanksgiving shopping we just returned from the grocery story and I was curious to see how much sales tax was added to my bill. Remember all that baloney during the Safeway saga about how much we needed Safeway and its sales tax.

Well shopping at Lunardi's and spending the grand total of $185.55 for 47 items the sale tax added was - wait for it - $2.03. However as we all know only 1/17th of that total goes to the City of Burlingame - 12 cents. I know ... if 28,000 Burlingame residents shop in Burlingame and spend $187,55, all those 12 cents add up.

I give thanks that Lunardi's is in Burlingame and am happy to give that great grocery store my $185.55. I am also happy to give Burlingame my 12 cents!

Happy Holidays

The Editors of the Burlingame Voice would like to wish all our readers a happy and safe Thanksgiving. There is much to be thankful for including our great community spirit here in Burlingame.
The editors are very thankful to all who have posted on the Burlingame Daily Voice over the past year or so; the many who have commented and the hundreds who have just lurked! (we do keep track of our traffic!) We hope that you all will jump into the conversation, after all it is your voice that counts!

More Surpises at the Supermarket

Today we got most of our Thanksgiving grocery shopping done; shopping at Safeway (on Howard and on Delaware,) and at Whole Foods in San Mateo. This time, we payed more attention to price differences and found out that Safeway may not be delivering on its promise of lower prices. Several items were priced the same, such as Martinelli's cider, which was on special at both stores for $1.99 per bottle. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, a six pack, was $7.99 at Safeway, Whole Foods price was $6.49., (the 12 pack was an even better bargain.) The big shocker was Amy's canned black bean soup, now carried with several other Amy's canned products at Safeway. It was a whopping $3.49, while the exact same can was only $2.19, (regular price) at Whole Foods. After having paid nearly $2 more on basic Arm and Hammer kitty litter last week at Safeway, (compared to the exact same product at Mollies) I am starting to feel like I've been bamboozled. On sale items where we need "the card" and 2 for ones, they are priced competitively, but what about everything else in the store? I'm beginning to wonder....

Dazzling Blush

There is a San Francisco Chronicle magazine article about Blush, Burlingame's latest nightclub. It is described as "the best looking nightclub in Burlingame". The decor is modern and looks alot of fun.

Good luck to Mr. Doss and his new nightclub - we are in need of nightlife in Burlingame where sometimes it is difficult to get something to eat after 9:30!

Goodbye Market, Hello Winter

Tomorrow, Sunday November 21, is the last morning for the Farmers Market on Park Road. The market runs from May until November and has been a great success now it has moved from the parking lot on Howard. I look forward to the market reopening in mid-May 2005 when the farmers will have the spring fresh fava beans for our Sunday lunch. Hats off to the chamber for organizing this market.

I hear that when the market does reopen we will have more stalls with interesting items including, rumor has it, a cheese vendor. What other stalls would you like to see at the market?

Strange Sighting!

Anyone walking down Burlingame Avenue early this Saturday morning would have seen an intriguing sight. A water trailer full of good Burlingame h20 being used to water our lovely new planters. I hear that up until this trailer was in use, residents had to fill up garbage cans with water and use buckets to water each of the 21 planters. Another example of Burlingame civic engagement!



BUT why has a sophisticated city like Burlingame allowed the installed irrigation system to get so broken and useless. Its absolutely ridiculous.

Parents Schooled on Drugs

There is an article in the Daily Journal about the two hour meeting held last night to educate us parents on what we don't know about drugs. I am amazed that only 100 parents turned out. The displays were worth seeing because the way the kids do this stuff and how they hide this stuff is not only ingenious but enlightening and scary.

As the drug agent said: "The glass bubble around this area won't be here forever".

What WOULD Burlingame do?

Kudos to Belmont for trying to save an historical house built in 1885 - the Emmett house. The Council have now found a new home for it and want to locate it to an historical district just a few blocks away.

Of course there is a stumbling block ... the new neighbors say the house is too big and because it will become a duplex for low- to medium-income residents it will become "a slum with tenants who do not care about the neighborhood". So who would be eligible to qualify for this housing? A family of three with an annual income of $85,000. This "low-income stigma" is what is upsetting the neighbors.

If the Peninsula Fox Theatre had not been demolished in the 70's for a shopping mall, would Burlingame be enlightened enough to save what was considered "an oasis of beauty" when it was built in 1926. What about the Encore Theatre also now a shopping mall but with the added bonus of a horse and rider outside?

Appropos to the two movie theatres, I would like to think we would save them but an Emmet House, sadly not. But what would Burlingame do?

Needs direction!

Article in today's Daily Journal about our new mayor who "gets a lot of feedback from Burlingame residents and said he will look to residents for direction in this new term as mayor". He has also "shunned" offices in Sacramento and Washington to work for Burlingame.

The ex mayor has "faith in galligan's ability to woo Safeway back to the table" and "getting Ionescu's project approved will be his biggest task".

Sorry the Hamilton family could not return the journalist's phone call but there are quotes from Galligan sr, the ex mayor and Mrs. Nagel.

I hope our new Vice Mayor, Mrs. Nagel and Burlingame residents will give our new mayor the direction he needs!
