Each day that I drive from my house on Acacia to the dog park on Airport Blvd., I envision the Broadway Overpass being modified to safely accommodate cyclists, pedestrians, people in wheelchairs, infants in strollers and dogs on leashes.
What would it take to convert one northbound lane of the Broadway Overpass into a "broad way" for pedestrian residents to access the bay side trails, and hotel guests to access the "village."
The infrastructure is already in place:
- existing traffic lights could be timed to improve the traffic flow onto northbound and southbound 101 from California Avenue to the freeway
- one lane of the roadway could be converted into an architecturally aesthetic walkway separated by an architecturally aesthetic traffic barrier
- bay side employers would be able to meet traffic mitigation requirements by enticing employees to leave their cars at home and walk to work
- residents would be able to fully optimize their pleasure of walking by having safe access to the parks, movies, trails and restaurants on the bay shore
- hotel visitors would be able to safely access and explore the village, and return to their family and friends and tell them about this quaint little gem on the peninsula
A bit of solutions thinking on this topic might just result in another Gem...however, it could potentially be the Gem of the Peninsula. What do you think?
