The Mayor provided some really strong HINTS as to what she wanted to see changed in the proposed plan. The main point was an 8,000 to 10,000 square foot reduction in the overall size. Safeway indicated they would not make that type of a change. The Mayor then made the mistake and blinked first, and now all of the residents of Burlingame will suffer for years to come. Not only with the Safeway project, but also with other projects, because the Mayor is offering something to Safeway that wasnt offered to other construction projects, a reduction of the waiting time to resubmit the project.

The Mayors stated concerns are misplaced. It isnt her place to plead Safeways case. The Mayors responsibility is to the residents of Burlingame and the Safeway project is not a citywide issue. The Mayors decision to change a city ordnance just so Safeway can get their plan before the Council is a citywide issue and a very serious one at that.

Safeway knows the cost of a construction is a function of time. Labor and material cost is, also, a function of time. The longer you wait the more expensive the project will get. If Safeway had a budget for this project the only way to stay within the budget, now, is to reduce the cost by reducing the size of the project.

I think we should relax a little bit on this one. I'm betting the Mayor is getting enough negative response to her idea that she may drop it. If you haven't given her individual comments, now would be a good time, but I'll bet she is getting an earful. No one I know thinks this is a reasonable idea.

I agree with you Al and also being an optimistic person I think our Mayor will fully realize that this is not a reasonable idea for Burlingame.
