Poor Mr Hudak had a bad commission meeting last night - one strike was that the new Safeway supplement to the EIR received a big blow from the Planning Commissioners.
He received a second strike when his client, Mr. Otto Miller's new housing development on Drake Avenue was "red-tagged". The reason - a "misunderstanding" when a contractor ripped out a redwood tree root without a city-designated arborist present. This development has been debated, discussed, questioned, written about and argued about for 16 months. The reason - the neighbors were concerned about the destruction of the redwood trees and the size of the monster houses.
Great visual - a resident showing the Planning Commissioners a huge root which had been ripped out of the ground. It certainly made the point, loud and clear! Considering Miller is a renowned developer who has destroyed many a good Burlingame home to build a monster house, you would think he would have listened to the neighbors, spoken to his contractors, listened to the Planning Commissioners and he would know the rules. Shame, shame, shame.

Speaking of trees, has anyone else seen the back page of the Spring 2004 Parks Rec Activities Guide? Mine just came in the mail today. There is some pretty important info about the rules regarding trees in Burlingame including the definition of a "heritage tree" and what residents can and cannot do to trees. But NO ONE CAN READ IT because it is printed over a dark picture of a tree. What a waste of paper (how ironic)...who's in charge here?

I know I saw that too and thought what a beautiful picture of a tree but not very informational, is it? Guess it gives people an excuse for not knowing what they should do about their trees!
