Mayor Coffey & Vice Mayor O'Mahoney met with Safeway again on August 5th to review their plans. Safeway unveiled a new detail about the proposed project;
A cermonial archway at the corner of Howard and El Camino!!! This, plus their attention to the contruction material seems to swayed O'Mahoney who said she was impressed by how the plan 'blended into Burlingame's downtown'
How can a 66,910 square foot box 'blend' into anything.
It seems our fearless sub-committee can't see the forest for the trees (and more about trees later!) No archway, or creative use of brick and plaster will diguise the fact that this store proposal is
TOO BIG!!- Written by admin
A monument to history? Hardly. Safeway has, in effect, insulted the intelligence of everyone who lives and works in Burlingame. Why are we suggesting to build a monument to our history when we have not honored the history that we have? We do not have a plaque program where properties and sites are reckognized for their significance. Until we have such programs in place Safeway other monuments should not be suggested.
Until Safeway Inc has addressed the larger issue s of Mass, Bulk and orientation it should not be suggesting the addition of public art, which in itself is inherantly controversial.

The so-called "historic" arch is a diversionary tactic in the war on Burlingame Ave. Whether there is an archway or not is totally irrelevant to the issues of size, orientation, and design of the store itself. One really has to wonder why Safeway is being so stubborn. They have done special designs in many other cities. Why not here???
