Locals are weighing in on the relative merits of the new sculpture at 398 Primrose. Apparently the new statue of Pegasus with a buxom young lady astride was placed in front of the door to get into compliance with the Feng shui principle about luck escaping out of a door. Let's hope the choice of Pegasus as the blockade doesn't cause problems since, according to Wikipedia, "Everywhere the winged horse struck his hoof to the earth, an inspiring spring burst forth." We don't need any new springs in downtown. Other than that mythical concern, I like it.
Yikes, first the BevMo signs, now Pegasus in the brick planter?-- time for some serious Ordinance assessment.
But I do have an idea- (provided the owner has a sense of humor) -- How about a contest called 'Paint Pegasus'?Every few months, a winning artist would get to paint the gleaming statue according to their own inspiration. It could be a "happening".
In fact, maybe we could get a bunch of these placed all over town, each painted differently! People will come visit and spend money here, just to see the Pegasuses. I've seen painted cows in La Jolla, and Painted Hearts in SF, why not Painted Pegasus's in Burlingame?

I thought any art in Burlingame had to be approved by an art committee.. How did this ever get through and who approved it?

How multi-cultural(!) A greek version of a chinese superstition. Looks like a good place to park that indian burrito truck.

it's private property...like the Horse at California and Broadway.

Burlingame does not have an Arts Commission.

Really some other way to create better feng shui, perhaps something of the living plant variety, could have been more appealing from every angle. It seems entirely out of place in that location.

Goes so nicely with the Tudor architecture.

who said "arts commission", Russ? Didn't someone need to approve that darn bench in the fragrance garden, the other one at the station, bronze stuff and signage? Laura mentioned a "commitee"....maybe she has the name wrong, but seriousely, Russ, even you?

I think it's pretty. Can't wait until someone paints the breasts red/black for BHS spirit week!

I watched as they unloaded Pegasus, half hoping they'd drop it or that they had the wrong address. Guess not...

Let's hope that the planned De Anza monument at Howard & ECR is selected by somebody with more artistic sense.

I was merely clarifying and responding to a previous post that mentioned an Art Committee. There is no such committee in Burlingame.
The benches in the park are approved by the Parks and Rec.Department. Not sure there is any real criteria or process for those approvals. The cement memorial bench on the North side of the station near the Chamber of Commerce was placed there years ago, not sure it was ever approved by anyone. I believe, according to folklore, that it was simply placed there with no permission from anyone.

Ouch! If there isn't an ordinance we need to pass one pronto! Now they have added posts surrounding the aparition with a heavy chain hanging gracefully form post to post. No amount of pait (red, black or orange) could hide this monstrosity.

If I had a business there, would I be able to post those terrible pictures of abortions that crazy man drives around with?
I really liked the paint job that was done at Burlingame Ave on the Spanish resteraunt in the 1990's. The door that was there was a peice of art too.
The food there was great. I can not remember the name of the place.
Anyway, that statue is ridiculous.
Driving down the street, entering the Downtown of Burlingame, and seeing that, I might turn around.
Do you think the person who bought and placed it there thinks," This is great!"
How do you tell someone their breath is bad?
Posted by: Holyroller | February 10, 2010 at 06:03 PM
We created architectural review to tell people that their house was not acceptable. We created a method to tell them about their breath in an objective matter. Maybe we need to create an art review process where any work of art exceeding a certain size and in public view, should be subject to review. An objective panel of citizens to include art experts.
I am not an expert but my guess is that this panel may not approve Pegasus on Primrose.

objective manner

Brussels has its Mannequin Pis. People travel from all parts of the world to see this little fountain. It happily pees at the visitors and is dressed in different costumes as allowed by the city council.
I think we could help the city budget by letting people pay to pee on this mannequin.
PS- You'll note that the address numbers above the statue and the Chinese characters for horse and ugly = "Death to the running-dog of Good Taste."

Stanley Lo...the arbiter of bad taste in town

Certainly the ugliest artwork since the aforementioned equestrian bronze got padlocked in place at California & Broadway. Maybe some wayward Hummer will put Pegasus out of his misery as it veers off Chapin Ave. Keep in mind, friends, that Pegasus probably dislikes this arrangement even more than the patrons of Stella Alpina.

call it what you want, but if the asian population continues to increase we might as well change the name from Burlingame to South Millbrae.
