B'Game Supe?

With the San Mateo Daily Journal reporting that B'game resident

County Supervisor Mark Church will run for the elected position of chief elections officer and assessor-county-clerk-recorder and is expected to make a formal announcement today.

Church was not available for comment yesterday but it was confirmed through his office he was seriously interested in taking over for Warren Slocum, who announced Wednesday he would not seek re-election, and filling a job once held by his father.

The chess pieces are in motion in Redwood City, first with local Dave Pine indicating

Dave Pine, trustee on the San Mateo Union High School District Board is more definitive about his plans if Church runs and is elected to the seat now held by Slocum.

“I would say now that I will seek the seat if it is open,” Pine said.

Burlingame Councilwoman Ann Keighran said running might be a possibility.

“Many people have asked me to run so I can say that I would be considering it but I don’t know at this point,” Keighran said.

The time gap is one factor to consider but so is the rarity of an open seat.

“They don’t come around too often,” Keighran said. “When someone takes a position, they tend to be in there for the full time.”

My take is that B'gamers would rather have one of our own in RWC than not.  Please read the whole article to follow the details about appointments vs special elections.

I would like to know who possibly approached Keighran to run for this position.....unbelievable. What credentials does she have to do this job? She doesn't even have credentials to be on the council....just a pushy mother and father.

The criticism of Ann Keighran is more than just a bit harsh, don't you think? After all, Ann has served the City well for many years both on Planning and Council. Ann has been elected twice and both times finished strong.

I hope Dave Pine runs. He is a consensus builder and since he is serving on a county school board, can reach out to more people. We need someone who is know outside of our own little community and I think Dave Pine posses many good qualities to be a Supervisor.

Ann see life in black and white and it seems she makes most of her decisions based on what is best for developers. While on the planning commission, she rubber stamped many monster homes. While a smart woman, she relies too much on other people (guess who) to do the deep thinking on substantial issues and concerns. While she comes well prepared to council meetings with endless notes and comments, she seems thown for a loop when someone asks her something from left field.

Ann has a beautiful smile and I just wish she would lighten up, breathe deep and reach out to those in the community with whom she both agrees and disagrees. But like most politicians, they are very thin skinned when someone takes a position that is not in line with them. What a shame. The mark of a good politician is being kind and open with all people (voters) and their various views and positions. Even if they have to fake it.....

That's my 2 cents.

It seems like Nagel is the one who is angling the most for a county job. But of course all locals know that you Can't Trust Terry.

Once again the criticism of a Council member is a bit harsh. All Council members are dedicated to helping our community and Terry is as tenacious and hard working for Burlingame as anybody, past or present.

SOME council members are dedicated to helping our community. Those mentioned above are in it for some other gain, or worse, they are beholden to a somebody else (or a group). Trust? That is not in the vocabulary of politics, and that includes small town, "I am a big fish in a little pond" way of thinking. Harsh? If you can't take the heat, don't get into the political arena.

I don't think criticizing Terry Nagel is harsh at all. She is working hard to ruin burlingame. She wanted housing on top of the new Safeway--bad idea. She wants taller building downtown--really bad idea. She told everyone to vote for the bullet train proposition--really, really bad idea. She wants more development near the new train--really, really, really bad idea. The criticism is hard because she is a crappy couincil woman. I really believe this.

What ever happened to Terry Nagel? She started out with good intentions but took a sharp turn. She is an endless self-promoter and constantly chirps about her website every time she opens her mouth (note to everyone on council; nobody reads your boring website but it is clear you read this one).

The last time Terry was Mayor she spent endless hours searching out all of her"Best of Burlingame" friends. Amazing how all the best of burlingamers were all of her supporters. She wasted city council time going on and on about all this silly nonsense. I am all in favor of honoring people who have done good deeds but this happened every other week and cheapened the whole idea of who is best.

Her stance on the bullet train is very telling. She just wants to have meetings and meetings and meetings and meetings until she gets her way and say. She wants the bullet train in Burlingame. Trust Terry??? The answer is clearly no.

Amen two cents. Terry's true colors have shown through on more than several occasions during her time on the council. She really started off as a "for the people" kind of gal, but has ended up being "all for Terry" in the end. I, along with many of her original supporters, wrote her off a long time ago. She is too self serving, much like her cohort, Keighran. Give me a break.

keighran is not her cohort. Ann is her own person. Any similarities to Terry are just that. They are not in cohoots.

Wow, Josefa, you are way off the mark if you think Keighran is her own person. She is making decisions based upon what her parent's think is right or wrong and what will be of benefit to construction workers or builders or carpenters or to herself. There has never been a more narrow minded, NEVER to make an independent, thoughtful council member, that I am aware of. She is absolutely led by others.

I attended a meeting at the Lane room this last week.
The meeting was a presentation of the 2010/2011 budget, and the effect it will have on the City of Burlingame.
This was the first opportunity I had to hear and meet Elder Brownrigg.
He made such a good impression on the audience after his talk regarding "how to get this City out of trouble," everyone applauded-loudly.
The look on the faces of the rest of the City Elders(regarding applause) was one of surprise and shock.
It is the first time I have ever seen a City Elder really present a solution to a problem. "The Budget Crisis."
Every other City Elder is beholden to very small "Pop" issues for votes and not able/capable to address issues that take in the Big Picture.
Tom the Tree, Easton(After school Day care center for OLA) Library, The Christmas Tree Lighting, the incredibily high worker comp injuries to the librarians, the need for the City of Burlingame Police to have ALL THEIR GUNS REPLACED DUE TO USE. (That was one of the most ridiculous budget issues ever.-Read the minutes)The carpet being replaced in the Main library, the ceiling being replaced in City Hall.
I do not know Elder Brownrigg, never heard of the man until he was elected.
However, after his presentation, it became obvious to the audiance there is not one single sitting Burlingame Elder that is qualified to run this City. Especially in times of fiscal crisis.
I think Brownrigg should consider being City of Burlingame Manager.
He really put everyone on their heels.

The look on the faces of the rest of the City Elders was one of surprise and shock because of how naive Elder Brownrigg's idea is. He seemed to think that the little Burlingame council can somehow rewrite the commercial property part of Prop. 13.

That's right. That's his plan. Repeal the most popular Proposition of the last 30 years. Let's get right on that. Who will put up the first $30 mil to gather the signatures?
