SAN JOSE Powered by a defense as dominant as its scorers are slick, the Burlingame High girls soccer team wrapped up a stunning follow-up campaign to last season's 23-0-2 mark on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers put the finishing touches on their latest masterpiece by overwhelming Mitty 2-0 at Valley Christian to finish 21-1-3 in winning their second straight Central Coast Section Division II championship. "Last year, we had the dream season. This year, it was a difficult act to follow," said senior forward Jenny Haggarty, who scored in all three of the Panthers' CCS wins. "But we said we're going to play our hardest, we're going to play Burlingame soccer, and we'll see how far it takes us." That mantra resulted in a season every bit the equal of its predecessor. Burlingame matched last season's 12-0-2 run to the Peninsula Athletic League's Bay Division title and again steamrolled through the vaunted West Catholic Athletic League in the postseason. After topping Valley Christian, St. Ignatius and Presentation last season in CCS, these Panthers beat Presentation 2-1 and St. Francis 3-1 before downing Mitty (15-6-5), which won back-to-back Division II crowns in 2005-07.
