Burlingame School District superintendent search begins - Da Marto leaving after 9 years (by Mark Abramson / Daily News Staff Writer)
The Burlingame School District has started its search for a new superintendent by reaching out to the public for opinions on what type of person should lead the district.
That process, which the school board approved earlier this week, includes an online survey on the district's Web site and a meeting for parents March 13. Similar meetings will be held for teachers and staff so they too can weigh in on the qualities they want in the successor to Sonny Da Marto, 60, who is departing after nine years on the job. Da Marto said he will receive one year's salary, or $140,400, when he leaves on June 30.
School district officials said feedback from the public will be weighed heavily in the selection of the next superintendent. "The idea is to get ... people to provide some input as to what they are looking for in a leader," said Michael Barber, president of the school board. "For the next two weeks we are trying to say to the community, now is your chance to give us your input."
Results from the survey and meetings will be presented to the board on April 8. The district's consultants, Chicago-based Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates Ltd., will use that information to help select 10 to 20 applicants. Other Bay Area school districts, including Redwood City, have used the same firm.
The candidates then will be narrowed down to three to seven for the board to interview behind closed doors on May 9 and 10, Barber said. The interviews are not open to the public because the district wants to encourage people to apply who may not want their bosses to know, he said.
Once a finalist is selected, the board will visit that person's workplace to see how he or she operates, and conduct further interviews with the candidate, Barber said. And if all goes well with the site visit, the board wants to make a hiring decision on June 2.
Thursday's meeting for parents will be held at 7 p.m. at Burlingame Intermediate School, 1715 Quesada Way. The survey can be found online at www.bsd.k12.ca.us.

The SMUHSD is letting go of 41 teachers at its board meeting this Thursday.
In a closed session before the meeting, BHS Principal Matt Biggar will be appointed to the position of Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.
"The District has issued non-reelection notices to probationary teachers totaling 11.4 FTE. Non-reelected
teachers will complete the current school year and will not be re-employed for the 2008-09 School Year. The
District has also issued the 30 FTE temporary teachers notices reminding them that they were employed for
the 2007-08 school year only."
